Grow and Split Your Agile Scrum Teams

Hello everyone,

To continue with yesterday’s blog, “Split and Seed your Agile Scrum Teams”; I will be discussing another pattern for spreading Scrum throughout your organization called Grow and Split. This pattern is a variation of the Split and Seed approach that involves adding team members to your teams until they are large enough to split and form two teams. The new teams are then added to and the whole process is repeated every sprint.

This technique may be very similar to the Split and Seed pattern, but it is a much slower process. It allows teams to become comfortable with Scrum and get experience under their belt. The two new teams resulting from the split will have members that are all well versed in how the process works and will be more likely to see success early on.

Also, with this method you don’t have to destroy existing teams. The new team members will all be fluent in Agile and won’t have to act so much like teachers to other members like in the Split and Seed approach.

There will also be more continuity felt by team members as you won’t be splitting up good teams to create new ones with people that are new to Scrum. Team members will stay together for longer periods of time and will not feel like their good team is being disrupted and torn apart.

This pattern is one of the most popular methods amongst companies switching to the Agile Scrum Development Process. However, there is one more approach that you can use to spread Scrum throughout your organization. The final method is Internal Coaching, which I will discuss in Tuesdays blog.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to discussing Internal Coaching with you on Tuesday.
